In advance of the opening of their new library, the residents of Stanton, Iowa, U.S., formed a human chain to transfer 3,000 of the 8,000 volumes from the old building to the new one. More than 400 community members participated, many of them schoolchildren. The old library used to be a bank, and the vault housed the children's books. In addition to the library, the new facility will also include a wellness center, walking track, gym, multipurpose room, and preschool. But even the old library had more than one purpose. As 73-year-old library board member Harriet Olson remembers, “This was cool in the summer. We didn't have air conditioning in our house.”
