Progeria

The new Brad Pitt film "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," in which the title character is born old and grows younger, opens tomorrow. The idea got me thinking about the genetic disorder progeria, which causes children to age rapidly and usually reach the end of their lives in their teens. Two outspoken kids with progeria are Hayley Okines of the U.K. and Ashley Hegi of the U.S. May they both live longer than average. I once saw a young child with progeria (age 2 or 3, if I had to guess, in Connecticut in about 1980) being carried by her father: it was less like she was being held by him, as she was perching attentively on his forearm.
