Anne Frank

Jewish schoolgirl Anne Frank (1929-1945), who went into hiding with her family during the Nazi occupation of the Netherlands. She kept a diary from that time until the family was betrayed and sent to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. She and her sister died of typhus and her father, the only surviving family member, had the diary - which had been found and kept by a friend after the family's arrest -published in 1947. It has since become one of the world's most widely read books.

The window in the secret annex in the attic of her father Otto Frank's office building where the Frank family and 4 Dutch Jews hid from 1942 to 1945.

The only existing film of Anne Frank, which was just posted to YouTube by the Anne Frank House, a museum in Amsterdam. She is shown looking out the window in footage of her neighbor on her wedding day.

Below are some quotes from Anne Frank's diary:
.
"I want to write, but more than that, I want to bring out all kinds of things that lie buried deep in my heart."
.
"It's really a wonder that I haven't dropped all my ideals, because they seem so absurd and impossible to carry out. Yet I keep them, because in spite of everything, I believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can't build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery and death."
.
"I don't think of all the misery but all the beauty that still remains."
.
"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single moment before starting to improve the world."
.
"We all live with the objective of being happy; our lives are all different and yet the same."
.
"I could go on for hours about all the suffering the war has brought, but then I would only make myself more dejected. There is nothing we can do but wait as calmly as we can till the misery comes to an end. Jews and Christians wait, the whole earth waits; and there are many who wait for death."
.
"I can feel the sufferings of millions and yet if I look up into the heavens, I think that it will all come right, that this cruelty too will end, and that peace and tranquility will return again."
.

"I must uphold my ideals, for perhaps the time will come when I shall be able to carry them out."
.
"I want to go on living even after my death! And so I am grateful to God for giving me this gift, this possibility of developing myself and of writing, of expressing all that is in me. I can shake off everything if I write; my sorrows disappear, my courage is reborn."
