Rapid prototyping

Using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and 4-dimensional ultrasound imaging, Royal College of Art student Jorge Lopez has pioneered the construction of a 3D model that recreates the specific features of a particular child in the womb. Doctors expect the new technology - called rapid prototyping -
will help expectant parents form a bond with the child while it is still in utero and deal emotionally with any anomalies the fetus may exhibit. His models are on display at the college in London, where Lopez has just earned his doctorate. He honed his skills modeling fossils and mummies, and is currently simplifying the software for use in individual clinics, where doctors could put the models in parents' hands within a few hours.
