Strutting serama

Yes my hero, puff out your chest!” cries Mohamad Hatta Yahaya as his prize rooster walks victoriously before a judge in a beauty contest held near Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Its breed, the serama, is known for its tiny size (adults weigh less than 500 g), richly colored plumage, and a puffed-out, heart-shaped chest (READ MORE ABOUT CHICKENS IN THIS GUEST POST). The bird's long-standing popularity as a pet in the East has now extended west to Europe and America. Membership in the World Serama Federation is 35,000 and is growing by 10% every year. But not all of the estimated 250,000 serama in Malaysia are pampered – some are eaten as traditional aphrodisiacs.
