Mystery orb

When he first saw it on Wednesday, Florida resident Gino Covacci (video here) gave it a little kick to turn it over. The object had been deposited at high tide on Pompano Beach, where he takes his morning stroll. It appeared to be a giant eye, so he decided to bring it to the attention of  authorities. "It was very, very fresh. It was still bleeding when I put it in the plastic bag." Officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission could not identify the orb that Covacci produced from his fridge, but they kept it on ice until it could be preserved in formalin and analyzed at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute. Scientists there will determine whether it belonged to a squid, a whale, a shark, a tuna, or - as oceanographer Charles Messing believes is most likely - a swordfish.
