Freaky frogs

These fanged frogs from Indonesia have just distinguished themselves from the other 6,000+ frog species in the world. While some reproduce in strange ways – for instance a couple of species, now extinct, that swallowed fertilized eggs, bred them in their stomachs, and gave birth to them out of their mouths – most female frogs lay eggs that are then fertilized by males and grow into tadpoles. These are the very first frogs known to give birth to live tadpoles. American herpetologist Jim McGuire of the University of California, Berkeley, describes the discovery, "Out came the tadpoles, and they were alive!....It was very reminiscent of the scene in Alien where the little monster explodes out of the stomach of the poor human who has been impregnated with that larval alien."
