Chinese New Year

Right about now, the Chinese are celebrating their Lunar New Year. A tradition of the holiday is to get together for a family reunion, which results annually in the largest human migration in the world. This year, hundreds of millions of people will log 3.6 billion passenger miles within 7 to 10 days to return to their home villages. Chinese search engine Baidu created a heat map of these journeys by train, bus, and car gathered from the locations provided by the smartphones of their 200 million subscribers. The densest areas in the graphic (ABOVE) are Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong/Shenzhen. It is, by the way, the "year of the horse" (although reading the BBC subtitles would briefly have had you believe otherwise).
