Mahalia

Celebrations were held yesterday in Washington, D.C., to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington. There were many clips on the news of the historic speech by civil rights leader Rev. Martin Luther King (1929-1968). I was always under the impression that King's estate was controlling the rights to the speech, but in fact his heirs are only enforcing the copyright that he registered and exercised during his lifetime. However, the world may not have heard the words at all if it weren't for gospel singer Mahalia Jackson (1911-1972). Having just performed two songs, she shouted as he was speaking, “Tell them about the dream, Martin!”
