More than a mishap

Remember that horrific accident at Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom in which a teenager's feet were cut off by snapped cables on a ride? It happened two years ago and here's a timeline to bring us up-to-date:
.
6/07 - Kaitlynn Lasitter, 13, loses both of her feet just above the ankles when they are sheared off by an 11mm wire cable when a ride, which drops patrons 150' at 50 miles per hour, malfunctioned. It was the second time she and two friends had ridden the attraction that night and they scream in terror when they experience noise and jerking during the ascension, but fail to get the attention of the operator to stop the ride. Then a cable snaps, splitting Kaitlynn's lip, bloodying her nose, scratching her arms and legs, and wrapping itself around her neck and shoulders. She thinks she is facing imminent death when the errant cable is pulled taught during the plunge and severs her feet. Though screaming, she remains relatively calm after the ride comes to a stop, even though she knows she has lost her lower legs. The feet are recovered from the scene and Kaitlynn is transported by helicopter to Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VMC), where she undergoes surgery 6 hours after the accident. Doctors reattach Kaitlynn's right foot, but are unable to restore circulation to the replanted left foot because the damage is too extensive, so they amputate below the knee and she is later outfitted with a prosthetic. She spends 23 days in the hospital.
.
2/08 - A crew dismantles the Superman Tower of Power attraction on which Kaitlynnwas injured. She and her family sue the amusement park for negligence in maintaining the ride, and Kaitlynn provides a deposition of her account of the events: She tells the court, "I felt like I was going to die...I remember feeling like I was on fire and smelling burning flesh." Also in this month, Kaitlynn undergoes her 4th surgery, in which surgeons at VMC removed 1 1/2" of bone that had grown through the muscle tissue and was pushing on the skin.
.
11/08 - Six Flags reaches a confidential out-of-court settlement with the Lasitter family that is said to provide for lifetime care. The Lassiters are also lobbying for tighter amusement park regulations. (There is commentary on that in this Coaster Buzz podcast.)
.
2/09 - At about this time, Kaitlynn boards her first amusement park ride since the accident, riding the children's roller coaster at Disney World with her father.
.
6/09 - VMC reports that Kaitlynn has been given the "all clear" regarding the reattached right foot - her body has not rejected it, and she has regained sensory and motor function. Her ordeal has required a total of 7 surgeries, 3 additional hospital admissions, 20 clinical visits, and dozens of physical therapy sessions. Six Flags, meanwhile, files for bankruptcy.
.
Having one reattached foot, Kaitlynn is in a unique position to compare replantation to prosthesis. She explains, "It's not that I favor one or the other, but sometimes I get mad at one because it's hurting me, but then the other one is hurting me the next day....It's like I have two kids - they both have different personalities, and one may be more annoying than the other, but I still love both of them."
