Tornados in Kirksville, Missouri

My Mom was flipping through the book of dissection photographs that I just received and stopped on p. 173 - taken at the American College of Osteopathy in Kirksville, Missouri (now the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine) - to tell me that the town had just been hit by a tornado a few days ago. Sure enough, a storm passed through on Thursday, killing 3 people and destroying 60 homes. Not only that, a tornado had flattened Kirksville almost exactly 110 years ago. At that time, 25 bodies were recovered - with as many as 100 deaths expected - and some 600 buildings were leveled. The New York Times reported that students, staff, and faculty from the American College of Osteopathy had formed rescue and hospital corps and were searching in the darkness and rain to provide relief to victims. One of the victims was their own - student William B. Howell lost his life.
