Chihuahuas in the weird news


Oct. 27, 2008 Boston / "Little" Wins Best in Show. A chihuahua dressed as Cerberus - the 3-headed dog who guards the gates of hell in Greek myth - takes the prize at the annual Howl-Oween contest at Faneuil Hall.

Apologies to my friend Deb - I tried to resist blogging about the dog that blew away and I just couldn't! So I offer that story and others below, and at the top, the best Halloween costume I have ever seen on a dog.

April 26, 2009 Detroit / "Tinker Bell" Swept Away by Wind Gust. A 6-lb. puppy was carried 3/4 of a mile by 70 m.p.h. winds that broke her leash and deposited her in a wooded field. She was recovered with the help of a pet psychic two days later, dirty and hungry, but otherwise unharmed.

Dec. 30, 2005 Fremont, Calif. / Pack of Angry Chihuahuas Attacks Police Officer. When a 17-year-old was escorted to his home after a traffic stop, 5 chihuahuas rushed the officer, causing ankle injuries.

June 8, 2007 Leesburg, Florida / "Dancer" Breaks Record. At 4" tall and weighing only 18 oz., a chihuahua is officially measured on his first birthday and determined to belong in the Guiness Book of World Records for shortest living dog.

Feb. 3, 2007 Lancaster, N.Y. / "Roxy" Survives Deep Freeze. Men burglarizing a home were annoyed by a barking chihuahua and put her in the freezer. She was rescued 3 hours later and the burglars face animal cruelty charges.

Jan. 17, 2008 New York/ "Venus," "Carmen" and "Pablo" Get Wheels. Born without front legs, 3 chihuahuas have been outfitted with wheeled aluminum wagons to assist their mobility and forestall the hip and spine injuries that their hopping was causing.

Sept. 7, 2007 Lake City, Florida / "Mimi" Adopts Squirrels. A 10-year-old chichuahua who had her last litter of pups 4 years earlier took pity on 4 motherless squirrels and began nursing them.

July 11, 2007 Odate, Japan "Heart-kun" Loves You. A puppy was born in a Japanese pet shop with a perfect heart-shaped marking that has made him a world-wide celebrity. The owner plans to keep him because of the luck and joy he brings.
