There is a new variety of pumpkin on the market just in time for Halloween - and Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The Porcelain Doll F1 (pictured above) was developed by DP Seeds LLC after its unintended discovery during plant breeding research. The seed company describes it as having deep ribbing and an almost square appearance. The flesh of the new pumpkin is the traditional orange, but the eye-catching exterior is being used to benefit breast cancer res
earch. "This was a combination of a new product, a new opportunity, and most important, a way to support a cause that affects nearly every family," says a Minnesota farmer. A charitable non-profit entity
called the Pink Pumpkin Patch is overseeing donations
from every
pink pumpkin sold this year to reputable organizations with the highest percentage of
dollars spent on actual research
. The foundation's board and staff are volunteers, their administrative
costs are deliberately kept low, and they are always looking for more participating
retailers and growers.
